"Play it Again"

Piano Lesson Tips for “Play it Again”

How many times have you said “Play It Again.” this week? If you are like me, you don’t even have to say it because our students already know that they have to play it again!

Repetition, let’s be honest, it’s boring and no one wants to do it….. until now.

What if I told you that I can get my students (even the 3 year olds) to play a section of music 11 times with NO COMPLAINTS. It’s true! I no longer fight with my students when it comes to repetition. The best part, they don’t even realize they are doing it.

Here is a quick and easy “how to” that will change the way you look at repetition.

All you need is a Mr. Potato Head.

How Mr. Potato Head Will Save Your Sanity

The next time you need a student to repeat a section of music, big or small, whip out Mr. Potato Head.

Every time a student plays the section correctly, they put a piece on Mr. Potato Head. Then, they repeat. It’s as simple as that! By the time they finish Mr. Potato Head, they played the section 11 times (depending on the model you have.)

Students are so excited when they finish so we take a picture and send it to their parents or post on social media.

Bonus Tip: There are many models of Mr. Potato Head that you can find. Mr. and Mrs., we use Olaf from Frozen, and Dory from Finding Nemo.

Bonus Tip 2: If you don’t want to buy a Mr. Potato Head, check your app store! I have Mr. Potato Head on my iPad (which is perfect if you travel teach).

If you post a picture of Mr. Potato Head in your studio, make sure to tag #MelodicMentors. We would love to see all of the Mr. Potato Head creations!
